Christening:
     Date:   15 OCT 1919
Place:   Chicago, Cook, Illinos, St. Stephen's Church

Individual Note:
2005 Janet Groll: "I found my Mom's baby book that her mom (Martha Geleng) did. My mom's name is listed as Marie Eleanore (both an a and an e) Leona Schmitt born August 3, 1919 in Chicago. but I always knew it as Eleanore (Sis) Marie.
It lists her christening at St. Stephen's Church, Chicago Oct. 15, 1919 by Rev A.J. Buerger. As I recall, this was Grandma's family church, where she was confirmed and married. Aunt Lala was her godmother.
My Mom (Eleanore) also said that he (Johann G.C. Geleng) was an alcoholic. Grandma Martha told her the story (Aunt Betty said she never heard this but my Mom said she heard it more than once from her mother) of listening for her fathers steps as he came home. If he was drunk, they (she and Martin) would hid under the table because he was pretty mean. When he was sober, he was wonderful. They had a pretty hard life. Grandma also related that they moved a lot because it was always going to be better someplace else. I cannot imagine moving often with all of those kids but Martha and her family moved a lot for better neighborhoods, cheaper rent, etc. The first home that she owned was when she and Grandpa Richard Schmitt retired and moved to Harrison, Arkansas.
